The CMH
Late Model Showdown this past Saturday was one for the books, as
they say. There was a huge crowd on hand as the Lucas Oil Late Model
Dirt Series and the O'Reilly MLRA prepared to get to it.
"That was the best race I
have ever seen," said a fan as he passed by me and several others in
the precession to the parking lot shouted in agreement to the old
man's comment.
After 50 laps of wild,
two, three and four wide racing and five or six lead changes, Bart
Hartman of Zanesville, OH finally took the win and made the turn for
the AAA Winner's Circle with a flat right rear. The 39-year-old,
second generation racer picked up his first win of 2008, and first
series win since 2005, which vaulted him into second place in the
Lucas Oil Championship Points Standings.
Hartman's thrilling win allowed him to become the 19th different
winner of the LOLMDS season. Hartman led Earl Pearson Jr. of
Jacksonville, FL; Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA; Terry Phillips
of Springfield, MO; and Terry Casey of New London, WI to the finish
line for the $10,000 triumph.
"It was an amazing night
of racing," said Kevin Greven. "The Lucas Oil Late Models, O'Reilly
MLRA and Pitt's Homes Racers always put on a great show, I am just
glad the weather finally allowed fans to get out here and see it.
They were definitely not disappointed tonight!"
From amidst the wild
racing throughout the field came Terry Phillips as he charged to the
front from an 18th place start to finish 4th. "The track was really
starting to come to me," said Phillips from the AAA Winner's Circle,
"We just had the wrong tire combination at the end."
In the Pitt's Homes "A"
Modifieds it was Phillip's Team Mate Eric Turner also charging
through the field from a 17th place start to finish second. Johnny
Bone Jr. took the feature win, his second this season at the Diamond
of Dirt Tracks. Justin Folk joined the two in the AAA Winner's
Circle. Steve Martin and Johnny Fennewald rounded out the top 5.
